A famous clock

原文

When you visit London, one of the first things you will see is Big Ben , the famous clock which can be heard all over the world on the B.B.C. If the Houses of Parliament had not been burned down in 1834, the great clock would never have been erected.

Big Ben takes its name from Sir Benjamin Hall who was responsible for the making of the clock when the new Houses of Parliament were being built.

It is not only of immense size, but is extremely accurate as well. Officials from Greenwich Observatory have the clock checked twice a day. On the B.B.C. you can hear the clock when it is actually striking because microphones are connected to the clock tower.

Big Ben has rarely gone wrong. Once, however, it failed to give the correct time. A painter who had been working on the tower hung a pot of paint on one of the hands and slowed it down!

If + had + past participle, subject + would + have + past participle"

例如,在文章中:“If the Houses of Parliament had not been burned down in 1834, the great clock would never have been erected.”

横向比较:与第二条件句("If I were rich, I would travel",用于虚拟现在)相比,此句型强调过去;与混合条件句(如"If I had studied harder, I would be successful now")相比,它更专注于过去结果,建立联系以帮助学生理解条件句的层次。

If I had arrived earlier, we wouldn't have missed the train."。

学生易犯的错误包括:混淆时态,如用"If I had + 过去式"代替"If I had + 过去分词"(错误:"If I had went",正确:"If I had gone");或遗漏have在主句中,导致句子不完整。

If the Houses of Parliament not burned down, the clock would not erect.
If the Houses of Parliament had not been burned down, the great clock would never have been erected.

原创例子:假设你在讨论历史,可以说:“If I had visited London earlier, I would have seen Big Ben before its renovation.” 学生可以替换关键词,如将"visited"换成"studied",并创建新场景,例如:“If my ancestors had moved to England, we would have learned about Big Ben sooner.”
