Did you want to tell me something?

原文

Dentists always ask questions when it is impossible for you to answer.

My dentist had just pulled out one of my teeth and had told me to rest for a while. I tried to say something, but my mouth was full of cotton wool.

He knew I collected match boxes and asked me whether my collection was growing. He then asked me how my brother was and whether I liked my new job in London. In answer to these questions I either nodded or made strange noises.

Meanwhile, my tongue was busy searching out the hole where the tooth had been. I suddenly felt very worried, but could not say anything. When the dentist at last removed the cotton wool from my mouth, I was able to tell him that he had pulled out the wrong tooth.

He asked me whether/if [clause]."

结构为:asked(询问)+ object(如 me)+ whether/if(是否)+ [clause](从句)。 He asked me whether my collection was growing" 表示将原问题转化为从句。

跨语法联系:它涉及从句结构,可与条件句或时间状语从句结合(如 "He asked if I was ready when the time came"),帮助学生理解从句在整体句中的作用。同时,与情态动词句型(如 "Could you tell me if...?")

学生常犯错误包括:将从句语序倒装(如 "He asked me whether was my collection growing",应为 "whether my collection was growing");或混淆 whetherif,尽管二者在许多情况下可互换,但 whether 更正式,尤其在正式写作中。

另一个常见偏误是遗漏连接词,导致句子不完整(如 "He asked me my collection was growing")。

He asked me if my collection is growing.
He asked me if my collection was growing.

She asked me whether I liked the new movie." 学生可替换关键词,如将 "asked" 改为 "wondered",或改变 [clause] 为 "whether I had finished my homework",并在实际场景中练习,例如在电话中转述问题:"He asked me if I could meet him tomorrow."
